George Clinton Explains How Kendrick’s “Untitled 08” Landed On Planet 'Phunk'
Dr. Funk recalls the making of “Ain’t That Phunk Kind Of Hard On You.”
On George Clinton’s latest cosmic jam “Ain’t That Phunk Kind Of Hard On You,” the godfather of funk recruits Kendrick Lamar and Ice Cube for a futuristic P-funk extravaganza. Hopping aboard Planet Funk with Clinton as pilot, both K. Dot and Cube join the party for an exciting ride, which the Funk legend told REVOLT, was one long journey.
For one, K. Dot’s first verse on the “Hard On You” remix happens to be the same featured on “untitled 08 | 09.06.2014,” from the Compton rapper’s recent chart-topping album, untitled unmastered. “We did it on the album First Ya Gotta Shake the Gate and then [Louie] Vega did a remix and Kendrick was on that one, but then [Ice] Cube was like let’s do another remix,” Clinton recalled about the multiple sessions that went into the Shake the Gate single.

“So he got some of his folks to work with the version we had on the album and flipped that, and so we came out with a third version. Kendrick wanted to do his verse over again, which is one of the verses he had did on untitled unmastered. He did that way back there on the Shake the Gate remix with Louie Vega and then he did it again with Cube’s version.”
The video of the all-star collaboration premiered on REVOLT on Thursday (March 24).
