Add Will Smith to the growing list of Oscar boycotters that includes Spike Lee, David Oyelowo and, of course, his wife, Jada Pinkett.

The actor confirmed it in an interview today (January 21) with Good Morning America, where Smith said “My wife’s not going. It would be awkward for me to show up with Charlize [Theron].

“We’ve discussed it,” he continued. “We’re part of this community. But at this current time, we’re uncomfortable to stand there and say this is okay.”

The head of the Oscars has struck back defending their committee as not racist, a charge that has been alleged as the past two years has saw no diversity in the nominees for the main awards.

Debate has increased around the issue, particularly whether the Oscars are the trees and, perhaps, the studio system and lack of diversity among executives is the forest.

For his part, Smith is focused on what’s in front of him at the moment, which is the upcoming Academy Awards (hosted by Chris Rock, who has been asked to not host by Tyrese and others).

“I think I have to protect and fight for the ideals that make our country and make our Hollywood community great,” he explained. “So when I look at the series of nominations of the Academy, it’s not reflecting that beauty.”
