The Weeknd, "Straight Outta Compton" And "Amy" Doc Earn Oscar Noms

  /  01.14.2016

The Weeknd really “Earned It.” The Canadian crooner’s racy “50 Shades of Grey” track was nominated for an Oscar today (January 14) in the Original Song category. He was one of many music nominees.

In the Documentary Feature category, two of the five nominations belonged to music productions, as “Amy” and “What Happened Miss Simone?” scored an Academy nod. Amy is a controversial look at the life of British singer Amy Winehouse. Nina Simone’s life is examined in the Netflix original,”What Happened Miss Simone?”, which opened earlier this year with a star-studded premiere in Harlem, New York.

The story of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E, MC Ren and DJ Yella not only inspired a generation of hip-hop fans, but now it’s Oscar nominated. “Straight Outta Compton” was announced as a nominee in the Original Screenplay category. Although the “Creed” team of Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan were shut out, Sylvestor Stallone followed up his Golden Globe win with a nomination in the Supporting Actor category.

The nominees for Best Picture include “Brooklyn,” “The Big Short,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The Martian,” “The Revenant,” “Room” and “Spotlight”
