André 3000 Talks Erykah Badu Collab, Acting Role In 'American Crime'

  /  01.06.2016

André 3000 doesn’t do many interviews these days, so when he does speak the words tend to carry some weight.

The OutKast rapper is joining the cast of ABC’s American Crime, which returns for its second season tonight (January 6), and in an chat with Billboard he opened up about working with former flame Erykah Badu, his acting ambitions and more.

“Our son Seven and I were trying to figure out songs that could help her—songs that were related to the subject of the mixtape: phones,” Dre told the magazine. “We came across he Isley Brothers’ 1974 cover of Todd Rundgren “Hello, It’s Me.” Ron Isley repeats the phrase “hello, hello” as if he was answering the phone. I told Erykah, “You should make this into a new song and get somebody to rap on it.” She was like, “Well, you should rap on it!” I’m happy it happened. It was a great reunion, because I don’t think people have heard a song from us in ages.”

Outside of working on music still (though, he has no date or solid plans set for a release), the ATLiens has been listening to jazz and Kid Cudi’s Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven LP while contemplating a move to the director’s seat.

“I’d like to get on the other side of filmmaking,” André explained. “I’ve always been more of a conceptual type of person so I’ve got to get a little bit more experience under my belt to step into the director mode.”
