Grand Jury Rules No Indictment In Sandra Bland Case
There will be no charges over the death of the Texas resident.
A grand jury in Texas declined yesterday (December 21) to indict anyone in the death of Sandra Bland, a woman who hanged herself in a jail cell after being arrested, which led many to believe foul play was involved.
In July of this year, Bland, 28, was arrested by Brian Encinia, a state trooper, and video of the interaction showed the incident became contentious between though two even though it was a routine traffic stop.
The exchange, to many activists, between a black woman and a white officer, was another example of police misconduct of an African-American at the hands of authorities. Encinia was belligerent and aggressive throughout as Bland questioned the officer over the arrest and grew increasingly agitated. Three days later, it was discovered she was dead at the Waller County jail.
According to prosecutor assigned to handle things, the case is still open and a jury will meet next month to discuss other aspects in the case; the prosecutor said the no indictment ruling was only related to Bland’s death and employees at the jail.
