R. Kelly’s life and career have been many things. Some good…some bad, but nonetheless, many things. So, it’s no surprise the Pied Piper named his latest offering The Buffet. At this point, Kells should know that putting himself in the line of fire with self-promotion such as the #AskRKelly fail is not a great plan, yet he still decided to try his luck with an interactive Huffington Post Live interview and it was just as bad as anticipated.
The controversial R&B singer simply wants fans to focus on his music. He’s tired of being “interrogated” and when asked about the relationship between his sex life and music he let the HuffPo host know he “didn’t come for a deposition.” R. Kelly insisted that he came to New York to “have a great time, visit some friends, do more business,” and he didn’t stop at the Huffington Post headquarters to “spoil that.” After pushing Kelly to answer questions about low album sales, which he responded to by blaming digital piracy, the interview went down hill fast. So far down hill that the host closed the interview by asking Kells how he responds to fans who like his music but cannot support him due to his alleged sex crimes that have overshadowed his career for years. He had a back-and-forth with the host for a few minutes before letting her know the interview was over and walking off set.
Last week, Kells posted a now-deleted video pleading with fans to support him saying: “I bust my ass going around, doing shows to survive, but I do this for the love. But come on, at some point we gotta start supporting each other. Everybody supports every other category of music, we gotta start supporting each other.”
Add all of the above to the fact that the Chicago native only sold 28,000 copies of his latest album and Kells is having one rough holiday season. He should just hope for change in the new year.
