Nine Inch Nails and British artist Russell Mills have collaborated to release a limited-edition art book, Cargo in the Blood, featuring artwork from the band’s 2013 comeback record Hesitation Marks. The compilation is available for purchase now via the Nine Inch Nails website, with only 2,000 copies of the 320-page book set aside. Each copy of the book will come packaged with a framed, mixed-media painting composed by Mills specifically for the project.

In tandem with the announcement, a new mini-documentary directed by Charles Leek explores Mills project and artistic process, as well as his contribution on Hesitation Marks and 1994’s The Downward Spiral. The film shows Mills and longtime collaborator Mike Fearon, as they set up shop in a Los Angeles warehouse and spent three weeks painting massive canvases that were then cut down into 2,000 individual pieces. Mills previously crafted the art for Nine Inch Nails’ 1994 record The Downward Spiral, as well as all of its associated singles, compilations and promo materials.

“Our renewed collaboration on Hesitation Marks very quickly suggested massive potential for the strange and the familiar to collide and collude in works that I hoped would encapsulate, by allusion, suggestion, metaphor and association, the conceptual ideas imbued in the album as well as in the undertow of its sonic world.

I created a total of 30 pieces for Hesitation Marks and they chose Cargo In The Blood for the cover of the deluxe CD. The title seemed to sum up everything I’ve been working on for the last 5 – 10 years, this whole idea of something that can be carried in the blood and it could be good or bad, something that could be character-building, something that could be destructive, something that could be positive.”
