The list of nominees for the 47th annual NAACP Image Awards were announced on Tuesday (December 8), Janet Jackson leads this year’s musical category with six nominations as she competes against Jazmine Sullivan, Jill Scott, Lalah Hathaway and Lauryn Hill for Outstanding Female Artist.

The cast of Empire comes close behind at four noms with both Yazz and Jussie Smollett competing against the The Weeknd for Outstanding New Artist while him and Pharrell Williams, also at four noms, battle it out for Outstanding Male Artist.

On the TV side, Fox’s highly talked about Empire scored a leading 12 nominations, including outstanding actor and actress in a drama series. The year old show will compete against Being Mary Jane (four), How To Get Away With Murder (five), Power (four) and Scandal (four) for the outstanding TV drama award.

Meanwhile, ABC led network noms with a total of 28 with its comedy series Black-ish following Empire’s lead at 10 noms.

Ryan Coogler’s Rocky spinoff “Creed” scored six mentions, the most among motion pictures, with its lead star Michael B. Jordan at two noms; one for Entertainer of the Year and another for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture.

The awards will air live on Friday, February 5 with host Anthony Anderson.
