Earlier this year, the great Swedish left-field electro-pop princess Robyn teamed with keyboardist Markus Jägerstedt and the late producer Christian Falk to form a group called La Bagatelle Magique, and release an EP titled Love Is Free. Touring plans were scuttled after Falk’s unfortunate passing led to Robyn’s public declaration of unabiding sorrow, but the project has relocated the darkened, transgressive joy bound up in the title track enough to release a dizzying and colorful video, starting off with Robyn and guest singer Maluca in bed, and not in much else.
“Love Is A Free”‘s thumping, sweat-soaked, and seedy syncopated dance-pop gets a masterful video treatment here, with vivid scenes smashed one atop another, and jumpcuts between far-flung cinematic concepts like Michel Gondry forgot his Ritalin. All due respect to SSION aka Cody Critcheloe for his directing here — he’s come a long way since popping on my radar back in 2008, though his singularly creative vision was evident from the jump, and has been well celebrated in the hang-time since.
Watch it, be happy, celebrate house music, go get into trouble.
