More and more we know, the consumption of music is moving away from physical product and experience to the digital realm of streaming and social media.
To help understand the context of this shift, digital giants Spotify and Instagram have released year-end information about their platforms, with Drake and Taylor Swift topping each, respectively.
Drake is 2015’s most streamed artist on Spotify, with over 1.8 billion streams and 46 million listeners. What’s a year off to this kid? His proper solo album doesn’t even arrive until 2016.
Meanwhile, Major Lazer scored the top streaming song on the platform with over 540 million plays. Their hit “Lean On,” featuring DJ Snake is now the most streamed song ever on Spotify. The Weeknd earned the most streamed album with Beauty Behind the Madness (60 million listens) and Justin Bieber’s Purpose LP notched the most streams in one day (36 million).
