Over the weekend, members of the Alpa Phi Alpha fraternity marched through Chicago’s West Chatham neighborhood, in order to take a stand against violence in their community. Despite snowy conditions, they waved signs and peacefully protested in hopes of awareness to the South Side of Chicago’s crimes issues, which has the 12th highest crime rate in any neighborhood. Their humanitarian actions were quickly supported by the community, including Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper.
Chance is known to be an active advocate against crime in his hometown, as he promotes an annual anti-violence called #SaveChicago and has been rewarded Outstanding Youth of the Year award for his community work. The protest also comes ahead of the Spike Lee directed film Chi-Raq, that is due out in theaters December 4.
