About two years ago, Drake launched a media embargo that came after the backlash of his now infamous 2014 Rolling Stone feature. All of that is behind the “Hotline Bling” rapper these days, after recently covering the 100th issue of The Fader and now stretching minds like a canvas for W Magazine’s Art issue.

The Artist Vs. The Author, And What Drake’s Dismissal Of Magazine Interviews Means For Music Journalism

Drizzy serves as a “muse” for five artists in the new issue, which is complimented with a brightly colored cover designed by the KAWS. Along with KAWS, other famous artists like JIM JOE, Mark Flood, Henry Taylor and Katherine Bernhardt use the self-declared “6 God” as their muse for artworks that can all be viewed here.

And with the story, also came along a quick Q&A that features Drizzy talking to writer Lynn Hirschberg about everything related to art, including his famous “I signed up for greatness” quote given during the summer rap war with Meek Mill.

“Realizing that I had a larger purpose was one of the most comforting, peaceful feelings,” he says when asked about the quote. “With music, especially, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m a vessel to deliver emotion to people. I want to provide the background music to your life as you live it. I’m there for you in heartbreak and tragedy and joy. The thought of being remembered is what keeps me going. What I was trying to say is, the negatives don’t matter—it’s history that counts.”

Making “history” is something the Toronto native has told (and done) time and time through the music, so when asked about his thought process, Drake makes note that he pays attention to moments like Adele’s with 21 to “stretch further.”

“I’m always thinking, How do I top what I’ve done? How do I make this thing stronger? I ask myself, “Why does Adele’s album go diamond, and how do I do that? How do I create art that makes minds stretch further,” he ponders. “I want to give many, many people many, many moments before I’m gone. That’s truly the art of what I do. It’s the only goal.”

In the wee hours of Thursday morning (October 15), Drake took to Instagram to set a new goal that would find him garnering his first ever No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Describing it as a game-changer, the “Back to Back” rapper advised, “If I get my first number one during the month of October it will be the biggest moment of my career to date (in my mind).”

As they say: Every day is another opportunity to reach that goal (Word to Ross).
