More "Soul Food" On The Way: Sequel Planned For Beloved Family Movie

  /  10.02.2015

Nearly 20 years later and we’re ready for another plate of “Soul Food.”

Fox 2000 is planning a sequel of the 1997 classic and it’s being titled “More Soul Food.”

George Tillman Jr., who wrote and directed the original, is writing the new script along with Nathan Skulnik. Tracey and Babyface Edmonds, who produced the original, are on board to produce the sequel as well.

The original “Soul Food” followed an African-American family whose bond begins to fall apart after the death of their matriarch and featured an all-star cast including Vanessa Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Nia Long, Michael Beach and Mekhi Phifer. The sequel is said to follow the younger generation of the family as they navigate life in today’s “social media-crazed” world. No word if the original cast will be featured in the follow-up.

The original earned $43.7 million and also led to a Showtime TV series, Soul Food: The Series, which aired from 2000 through 2004.

The epic soundtrack that accompanied the movie featured several chart-topping hits from Missy Elliott, Boyz II Men, Puff Daddy, Dru Hill, Usher and even Earth, Wind & Fire.

Although it’s not confirmed, we do hope to see the original cast make cameos in the film, at the very least. One thing is for sure: plan for an amazing R&B soundtrack if it’s anything like the original.
