In the 100th issue of Fader, aside from covering the life and times of Aubrey “Drake” Graham and the disappearing act of Rihanna, the publication beams its lights on the mystery and urgency surrounding Lauryn Hill’s oft-discussed follow-up to 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

In addition to detailing the importance that hems in this perpetually-anticipated album, the in-depth story also provides a glimpse into a hopeful future.

Hill’s current producer Phil Nicolo is quoted in the feature and reveals that “much more musical” music could be imminent from the legendary songstress. Here’s how the story goes:

She began touring again five years ago as a way of exercising artistic muscle and financing her recording plans, says Phil Nicolo, one of her current producers and a founder of Ruffhouse, the Fugees’ original label. According to Nicolo, she is closer than ever to finishing the follow-up to ‘Miseducation’… He says she’s already built up enough material to release a new album, and that musically, it will harken back to ‘Miseducation.’ Whereas the few tracks she’s released in recent years feature a stream-of-consciousness that is harsh at times, Nicolo describes this work as “much more musical.” It is political, but also deeply personal, he says. She is drawing “from all of her inputs.”

Nicolo also said that Ms. Hill is focused on bringing her A-game on this new album. “She wants to be right. She wants to be perfect… I can say this: I know creating makes her very happy.”

Seeing as how we’ve gotten releases from D’Angelo and Dr. Dre, we can definitely keep hope alive for a possibly approaching album from Ms. Hill.
