Leon Bridges is an imprint of timeless soul with a southern gentlemen vibe.
Influenced by his Texas roots, the soul man released his debut introduction with this year’s Coming Home album, and now his hometown is paying him forward. Remixing his vintage-flavored set of tracks, MICK gives the tunes a Houston treatment on a seven-track mixtape, Coming Home to Texas.
“Leon Bridges is an underground king who made a classic album with a timeless sound,” explained the DJ/producer. “I wondered what would happen if I remix that with timeless classic from his home state of Texas? This is the result.”
The remixes act as a sonic middle ground between his grassroots of retro-soul and the grit of the Texas bounce. MICK brings the boom-bap from Texas rap heroes Bun B and Slim Thug, resulting in modern layers mixing with classic blues shine.
“I’ve heard so many comparisons: The next Sam Cooke, the next this, the next that. However, I couldn’t help but wonder how a kid in his 20’s would sound if his inspiration was threaded through the classic Texas hip hop he grew up on. This project answers that. I combined Leon’s soulful vocals with the samples and vibes of my favorite Texas hip-hop artists, including DJ Screw, UGK, and Scarface.”
