Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson is in early talks to take on the coveted role of Aretha Franklin in a new biopic from the producer of the box office hit Straight Outta Compton.

The film’s producer, Scott Bernstein, appears to already have his attention on another treatment, this time focusing his lens on the life and legacy of the incomparable Aretha Franklin. The biopic, which already has the soul-legend’s approval, would highlight equal parts of her musical career and her marriage to abusive manager Ted White. In a 2012 interview with Glamour, Franklin explained her only concern is on accuracy by saying, “Let’s present the facts and be as creative as possible with them.” Also mentioning she would want Denzel Washington or Billy Dee Williams to play her father.

As for the leading role, the Dreamgirls star (who auditioned for American Ido with a version of Franklin’s “Share Your Love With Me”) is being considered for the role, and she appears to be a great fit. Not only does Hudson certainly have the pipes, but she can relate to Franklin’s family stint of defeat and abuse. Further details and confirmations will be announced within the coming months.
