As “Straight Outta Compton” racks up on accolades following its big debut at the box office over the weekend, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube have filed court papers demanding their release from a situation that took place earlier this year on the set of the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube filed a demurrer last week, stating that they committed no malfeasance and that a “special request” for Che “Bone” Sloan, hired security on the set, to escort Suge Knight to leave the set on that fateful January 29 incident, “did not create undue risks for anyone let alone Carter.”

The lawsuit in question is one filed by Lillian Carter, the wife of Terry Carter, who was killed in the January hit-and-run near the set of “Straight Outta Compton,” after Knight ran him over, while also hitting Sloan. Lillian Carter filed the suit in Los Angeles superior court on June 3rd, alleging that Dre, Cube, Universal and Cle “Bone” Sloan didn’t provide adequate security on the set of the film.

In the legal documents, Dre and Cube’s lawyers argue that they owed no duty to Carter and could not predict what Knight would do when he arrived on location. According to their motion, “These allegations plainly demonstrate that allowing Suge to remain at the base camp posed a serious risk that Suge could have injured someone at the camp — including Dr. Dre, Bone or one of the numerous cast and crew working on the film. Certainly, the risk that Suge might leave the base camp and proceed to his fatal confrontation with Carter was no more foreseeable than the possibility that Suge would injure or kill someone else if he had been permitted to stay.”

Knight is currently awaiting trial for murder of Carter and attempted murder of Sloan.
