The Black neighbor of Breonna Taylor is speaking out following the indictment of former Louisville Detective Brett Hankison.

Last week, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced that Hankison would be charged with three counts of wanton endangerment for “blindly” firing into the units of Taylor’s neighbors. However, two bullets went through Stanley David’s unit and none of the officers were charged for it.

“My apartment was hit too,” David told the Courier-Journal. “The bullet that came through my floor right in front of my bedroom door, if that bullet went through my bed, maybe I would have been dead too. I’m a human being too.”

David said the shooting lasted for five minutes. One of the bullets went through his hallway and the other came through near his bedroom door, which was almost five feet from where he was sleeping. His young daughter was laying next to him when the gunfire started.

“Daddy! Daddy!” his 7-year-old yelled to wake him up. He grabbed his daughter and the two went into the living room where his elderly mother, a little girl she was babysitting and the girl’s father were huddled up. David’s apartment was located directly above Taylor’s.

He also refuted claims that Taylor had drug activity taking place at her apartment. “Breonna was nobody like they claim,” David said. “For as long as I knew her, I didn’t see anybody coming there with anything like that. There weren’t people coming in and out. It was only she and her boyfriend.”

He said that none of the people in his apartment heard the police officers announce themselves or knock on her door. At first, he thought someone was breaking into one of the units.

Since the shooting, David and his family have moved out. His daughter was traumatized from that night and did not want to go outside to play. His mother stopped her daily exercise walks to the leasing office. He said that he does not think that it’s “right” that Taylor was killed and no one was charged with her death.

“Breonna was not doing drugs, and she got killed for nothing. She never had a gun. She did not shoot any shots,” he said.
