The New York Post is being criticized for criminalizing Black victims while making white people suspected of crimes look like the “good guys.”

On Wednesday (Aug. 26) night, the Post shared a story praising Kyle Rittenhouse for cleaning graffiti by a high school in the city. Hours after performing his good act, however, the 17-year-old shot at protesters demanding justice for Jacob Blake, resulting in two fatalities and a severe injury. He was eventually charged with First Degree Intentional Homicide.

Shortly after, the news publication shared an article about Blake who was unarmed when gunned down at least seven times in the back by Kenosha officers on Sunday (Aug. 23) night.

The story revealed he was carrying a knife in his car at the time of the shooting and chose to use a photo of the 29-year-old appearing to look very angry. There was no mention of Blake breaking up a fight between two women before the gunfire.

After getting wind of the stories, writer and activist Parker Molloy called the Post out for its new coverage. “NY Post’s really showing its hand,” she penned in a tweet and Twitter users flooded her comments with their reactions.

“Is the nypost trying to convince me that rittenhouse is really a good boy because he cleaned up some graffiti,” one person tweeted.

“It took three days to ‘find’ a knife in the car of the victim of point blank police shooting,” read another tweet. “It took a day to get a photo of graffiti removal of the 17y old shooter who killed two people with AK-15 rifle, walked past police and was not picked up for a night!”

A third user penned in a tweet, “I’m so done. When the media is part of the problem. Our only hope is our own voice and power of social media. Seek out Black media drop, unfollow, do not retweet or click on any of these media houses links. Roland Martin good alternative for news.”
