The Washington Redskins are moving towards changing their team name. ESPN reports that the team is “likely” to change the name due to “renewed pressure.”

“In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team’s name. This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks,” the statement said. “… We believe this review can and will be conducted with the best interest of all in mind.”

On Thursday (July 2), FedEx, which has naming rights to the stadium where the Redskins play, asked the team to change their name, which has been considered a racial slur and condemned by Native American groups. “We have communicated to the team in Washington our request that they change the team name,” FedEx said in a statement.

According the outlet, FedEx, Pepsi and Nike each received letters signed by over 80 shareholders and investment firms who asked the companies to discontinue their ties with the team, unless they follow through with a name change. All Redskins merchandise has been removed from the Nike website.

“This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise, but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field,” Redskins owner Dan Snyder said in the statement.

Since the recent protests against police brutality and racism have reemerged following the death of George Floyd, the NFL says that it will do a better job of listening to its players when they voice their opinions regarding social justice issues. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement saying that the league will “condemn racism and the systematic oppression of Black people.” He also said that players are now encouraged to peacefully protest.
