The body of a 26-year-old Fort Hood soldier has been found by a lake nearby the Texas military base, officials revealed on Tuesday (July 21). The soldier — identified as Pvt. Mejhor Morta — was discovered “unresponsive” on Friday (July 17) in the vicinity of Stillhouse Lake.

“The Black Knight family is truly heartbroken by the tragic loss of Private Mejhor Morta,” Lt. Col. Neil Armstrong, commander of the 1st Battalion 5th Cavalry Regiment, said in a statement. “I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.”

Armstrong added that Morta was a “great troop” and that the entire formation is mourning his passing.

According to NBC, Morta joined the Army in September 2019 as a mechanic. The Pensacola, Florida native had received three medals for his service. The Bell County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating his death. The cause of Morta’s death has not yet been confirmed and the Sheriff’s Department hasn’t commented on whether or not they suspect foul play.

The sad news marks the third time within a month that a Fort Hood soldier’s body has been found near the base. On July 1, the body of Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen was discovered about 20 miles from Fort Hood.

The 20-year-old had been declared missing since April and had confided in her family that she was being sexually harassed by a fellow soldier that they presume to be deceased suspect Aaron Robinson. Police attempted to arrest Robinson in the case of Guillen’s death, but he committed suicide. Officials have arrested Robinson’s girlfriend, who is accused of helping Robinson dispose of Guillen’s body. She has pleaded not guilty of tampering with evidence.

Less than a month ago, the body of 24-year-old missing Fort Hood solider Gregory Morales was found 10 miles from the Stillhouse Hollow Lake. Officials have said they suspect foul play in Morales’ death.

NBC reports that there is no indication that the deaths of Morta, Morales and Guillen are related.
