Goya Foods faces backlash after its CEO shows support for Trump

The hashtag #Goyaway was trending worldwide on Twitter as people said they would boycott Goya Foods.

People are calling for a boycott of Goya Foods after Robert Unanue, the brand’s CEO, gave a speech praising Donald Trump at the White House Rose Garden on Thursday (July 9).

“We are all truly blessed ... to have a leader like President Trump who is a builder,” Unanue said during his speech. “We have an incredible builder and we pray. We pray for our leadership, our president.”

The hashtag #Goyaway was trending worldwide on Twitter Friday (July 10) as people tweeted that they would stop buying Goya food products for their homes. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter to suggest that she planned to boycott the Goya brand. “Oh look, it’s the sound of me Googling ‘how to make your own Adobo,’” she tweeted.

Julián Castro, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary, encouraged people to reconsider buying Goya brand foods following the CEO’s remarks. “@GoyaFoods has been a staple of so many Latino households for generations. Now their CEO, Bob Unanue, is praising a president who villainizes and maliciously attacks Latinos for political gain. Americans should think twice before buying their products. #Goyaway.”

Despite the backlash, Unanue said in an interview with Fox News that he is “not apologizing” for his recent comments about Trump and called the boycott a “suppression of speech.”

“You’re allowed to talk good or talk praise to one president but you’re not — when I was called to be part of this commission to aid in economic and educational prosperity and you make a positive comment, all the sudden that’s not acceptable,” Unanue told the outlet. “If you’re called by the president of the United States, you’re going to say, ‘No I’m sorry, I’m busy, no thank you?’ I didn’t say that to the Obamas and I didn’t say that to President Trump.”
