The retired boxer will finance all four funeral services that will take place in Houston, Minnesota, Charlotte and another location that will be announced at a later date. He reportedly felt that it was only right to help after his friend Anzel Jennings, CEO of TMT music label, revealed that she grew up with Floyd.
Floyd died last week in Minneapolis at the hands of four police officers. His senseless death was caught on video by witnesses. Former officer Derek Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes. Floyd screamed out multiple times that he couldn’t breathe, but his calls went unanswered. He lost consciousness and was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
All four of the officers have been terminated from their job. Chauvin has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. Protests have erupted across the nation as people demand that all officers be arrested and charged.
Floyd’s family has just revealed the results for the independent autopsy. The autopsy found that Floyd’s death was a “homicide caused by asphyxia due to neck and back compression that led to a lack of blood flow to the brain,” said Ben Crump, the family’s lead attorney.
“Sustained pressure on the right side of Mr. Floyd’s carotid artery impeded blood flow to the brain, and weight on his back impeded his ability to breathe,” he said. “The independent examiners found that weight on the back, handcuffs and positioning were contributory factors because they impaired the ability of Mr. Floyd’s diaphragm to function.”
Dr. Michael Baden also brought up the fact that Floyd repeatedly said, “I can’t breathe,” as Chauvin knelt on his neck. “Police have this false impression that if you can talk, you can breathe. That’s not true,” he said.
