On Saturday (Nov. 7), America breathed a huge sigh of relief when it was officially confirmed that Former Vice President Joe Biden was named the president-elect in the 2020 presidential election after days of counting a historically high number of votes across key swing states.

In honor of the major achievement, both he and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris addressed the nation in speeches that same evening. In her speech, Harris, who walked out to Mary J. Blige, which watchers of the event absolutely loved; made sure to thank the American people — voting polls volunteers included — for doing their part to help restore democracy to the United States after four years under Trump.

“We, the people, have the power to build a better future,” she said. “And when our very democracy was on the ballot in this election, with the very soul of America at stake and the world watching, you ushered in a new day for America.”

Harris didn’t end without speaking about the history she’s made as the first female, first Black person, and the first vice president-elect of South Asian descent. She added that even though she may be the first woman VP-elect, she will not be the last.

In his speech, Biden assured the American people that he will do everything in his power to restore the nation and be a president for all people — including those who didn’t vote for him.

“I understand the disappointment tonight. I’ve lost a couple of times myself. But now, let’s give each other a chance,” Biden said. “This is the time to heal in America... I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide, but unify, who doesn’t see red states and blue states, but only sees the United States.”

He added: “I sought this office to rebuild the soul of America, to rebuild the backbone of this nation, the middle class and to make America respected around the world again.”
