Kenneth Walker, boyfriend of the late Breonna Taylor, is opening up about the night his girlfriend was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officers in her home.
In a new interview with Gayle King, co-host of “CBS This Morning,” he revealed what happened the night the cops entered their home as the couple was lying in their bed. “It was dead silent in the house,” he explained to King. “And it was 12, 1 at night, or whatever time. So, it was — it’s always quiet. We live in a quiet place. So, if somebody was on the other side of the door saying anything, we would hear them.”
When King asked if he was certain that LMPD officers Brett Hankison, Myles Cosgrove and Jonathan Mattingly did not identify themselves before entering Taylor’s home, Walker said, “I’m a million percent sure that nobody identified themselves.”
Once the officers entered the home, Walker grabbed his gun and fired a warning shot. He believed that the apartment was under attack by robbers.
“That’s why I grabbed the gun. Didn’t have a clue,” he said. “I mean, if it was the police at the door, and they just said, ‘We’re the police,’ me or Breonna didn’t have a reason at all not to open the door to see what they wanted.”
Taylor was shot multiple times and ultimately died in her apartment hallway. Mattingly claims that Walker shot him in his thigh, but the ballistics report failed to prove that. No drugs were ever found at the home and officers knew several weeks prior to the raid that no suspicious packages had been received at her home. Taylor was never involved with dealing drugs.
“That’s why I never thought it was the police. Because why would the police be coming here?” Walker said.
