2019 is Lil Nas X’s year. Yesterday (Aug. 28), it was confirmed that the 20-year-old rapper has been nominated for a Country Music Award.

While on Twitter, Lil Nas revealed that his record ”Old Town Road (Remix),” which features Billy Ray Cyrus, has been nominated for Musical Event of the Year. “Thank you guys for this nomination!!” he simply wrote to his social media account.

Although there were various conversations on whether or not the record is “country enough,” it seems as if the argument is over. Earlier this year, Producer YoungKio, spoke on creating the song’s beat. YoungKio reasoned that “Old Town Road” can be considered a country song.

“Personally, I think you can call it a country-trap song, a mixture, because Lil Nas X took the country vibes vocally and how to just sing their music,” YoungKio began. “I’ve listened to country music and the whole vibe, he used that as an artist on this beat. This beat is a trap beat with a rock-type sample. That’s how I see it. It’s not a country beat. I didn’t make it with that thought behind it, but he turned it into a country-type song with what he did with the lyrics, his vocals and just promoting that way.”

Earlier this week, Lil Nas took home Song of the Year for “Old Town Road (Remix)” at the 2019 MTV VMAs. In that same category, Lil Nas beat out other artists including Drake, Ariana Grande, Jonas Brothers, Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper and Taylor Swift.

“Thank you so much,” he began. “This is my first award, ever. I want to say thank you to this man [Billy Ray Cyrus] for helping me take my career to the next level.” Keeping his acceptance speech short and sweet, Cyrus thanked the fans and the universe for giving him this opportunity.

Congrats, Lil Nas X!
