In celebration of April doubling as National Poetry Month, hip hop fans are being encouraged to get creative and tap into the late Tupac Shakur’s inspiring passion for the written word.

As announced on Thursday (April 25), Tupac’s estate has launched a new poetry competition, calling for fans of the late rapper to create original work that focuses on how his life and legacy inspires.

Those who submit poetry created in line with the contest will be in the running to win a limited edition merchandise bundle designed with Tupac’s own poetry in mind. The merch collection features a denim jacket, hoodie, T-shirts, tote bag, pencil set and a journal, with each item speaking to the legendary artist’s love for writing.

Those interested in entering the contest must follow a series of guidelines. Per the estate, each submitted poem must be written in English, as well as be free of any profanity, derogatory comments or sexually suggestive content.

Additionally, the contest guidelines ask that the written work not promote alcohol, illegal drugs or unsafe activities. The guidelines ask that the poetry honor the intention of the project, which is to promote positivity and goodwill in line with what Tupac was working to spread prior to his death in 1996.

In related news, earlier this year, a series of erotic artworks drawn by the legendary rapper sold at an auction for over $21,000, further speaking to the lengths fans will go to own a piece of hip hop history. Through his work on-screen, his influence in music and his work as a poet, Tupac’s creativity and mission to self-betterment continues to inspire across generations of hip hop fans.
