The hip hop community is mourning the death of Nipsey Hussle.
On Sunday (March 31), the 33-year-old rapper and father of two was fatally shot six times outside of his clothing store in Los Angeles. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, according to law enforcement sources. Footage from the crime scene was uploaded onto social media by eyewitnesses and appeared to show Hussle (real name Ermias Ashedom) lying on the ground unresponsive before his passing was confirmed.
Prior to the tragic shooting, Hussle sent out what would be his final tweet, writing, "Having strong enemies is a blessing." The LAPD is reportedly treating his murder as a homicide and looking for "one black male suspect" at this time, yet it remains unconfirmed if Hussle's death was gang-related.
The "FDT" rapper was a member of the Rollin' 60s and opened up about his ties to the Crips gang as a teen during an interview with Vlad TV in 2014. During his lifetime, Hussle worked to end gang violence and collaborated with artists like The Game and YG, who have ties to the Bloods, as TMZ points out.
In February 2018, after several mixtape releases, Hussle dropped his first and only album, Victory Lap. The project debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold 53,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. The LP, with features by Kendrick Lamar, Diddy, and Cee-Lo Green among others, also went on to receive a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 61st Grammy Awards. In the end, he lost out on the coveted gramophone to Cardi B.
The untimely passing of the Los Angeles native has many highlighting the ways he inspired them. "Watching Nipsey inspired me to invest and own in our communities," HBO's "Insecure" creator and actress Issa Rae tweeted Sunday night. Hussle was a major proponent for African-Americans owning their own businesses. "He was a solid man who loved his woman, his family and his community. This hurts," Rae stated. Hussle leaves behind two children: a daughter from a previous relationship and a son with actress Lauren London.
The tributes for Hussle didn't stop there, though. Celebrities including Drake, Rihanna, Snoop Dogg, Meek Mill, LeBron James, and more shared their condolences for the late rapper on social media. Keep reading to see how the hip hop community is paying their respects.
