UPDATE: R. Kelly's bond has been set at $1 million
Disgraced singer R. Kelly is scheduled to appear in court today (Feb. 23) for a bail hearing after being arrested on a slew of sexual abuse charges spanning from 1998-2010.
In a press conference on Friday (Feb. 22), Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx announced that the R&B musician was indicted on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four alleged victims. The charges are class two felony in Illinois.
The indictment accuses Kelly, whose full name is Robert Kelly, of sexual acts with three children over the age of 13 but younger than 17. For one of the alleged victims, an age range isn't listed. However, the charges state that Kelly used force or a threat of force.
A grand jury assembled in Cook County in connection to the new allegations after a new tape sent to the authorities by attorney Michael Avenatti surfaced earlier this month. The tape allegedly shows Kelly performing in multiple sex acts against a 14-year-old girl.
After Kelly's arrest, his attorney Steve Greenberg said the singer is "shell-shocked" and "extraordinarily disappointed and depressed" by the new sex abuse charges. The Associated Press reports that Greenberg said he attempted to sit down with prosecutors to discuss "why these charges are baseless," to no avail and that he is looking forward to Kelly being acquitted.
Greenberg also states that one of the charges involves the same victim at the center of his 2008 trial.
"One of the charges appears to involve the same alleged victim from the earlier case and double jeopardy should bar that case," he said.
Currently, New York and Georgia are currently investigating the "Step in the Name of Love" singer. A previously closed case in Georgia has been reopened and a grand jury has convened in New York based on investigations from the FBI and IRS. On a federal scale, Homeland Security Investigations is investigating to see if Kelly was in violation of [The Mann Act]( after allegedly flying Azriel Clary from Palm Springs to Phoenix to Orlando for the purpose of sex in 2015. Clary was 17 when the alleged act took place.
