Back in January 2017, Oakland rapper Keak Da Sneak was shot in a failed robbery attempt. Two months later in March 2017, he was arrested for possession of a firearm as a felon after a gun was found in his car. While he was out on bail, he was shot again eight times in August 2017 and was left physically disabled.

For the possession of a firearm charge, Keak was sentenced to 16 months in prison and was originally set to start his sentence following the hearing on Jan. 28, but Amador County Superior Court Judge J.S. Hermanson gave him extra time to complete an essential medical procedure. Now, he’s expected to turn himself in on Feb. 7. However, Keak doesn’t believe he’ll receive the proper medical attention he needs while surviving his sentence.

Fans of the Bay Area legend have started a petition to have Keak’s jail sentence suspended. “The rapper isn’t asking for leniency on his sentence,” the petition on Change.org says. “He is asking for home confinement/anklet bracelet.” The petition is looking for 25,000 signatures. As of press time, it has 24,700.

Fellow Bay Area MC E-40 has shared the petition on Twitter, along with a video of Keak giving an update on his current medical situation. “It ain’t looking too good,” Keak said. “I just got an IV put in me for an antibiotic. I asked them for a stay of execution. I was asking for six weeks or at least three. They gave me a week.”

Keak is still optimistic and recording music in hopes to take care of his family. “It got me doing a lot of recording right now, so while I’m gone I can be dropping music to take care of my family,” he told KQED in a recent interview. “I have a lot of people in my corner, on my side. They feel like it’s biased, the way they’re treating me. If I was another race, they wouldn’t be doing me like this.”
