Lizzo is at the center of another copyright infringement accusation. According to Billboard, 90s singer CeCe Peniston has accused the singer of stealing her work. Peniston took to social media and explained that Lizzo’s “Juice” uses ad-libs from her 1992 record, “Finally.”
Peniston explained her accusation against Lizzo by uploading both of their songs side-by-side on Instagram. She captioned the post, “this is a clear example of #copyrightinfringement. Cece Peniston versus @lizzobeeating, y’all check this out and btw I love her music.” According to Complex, Peniston is referring the “ya ya ee” ad-lib that Lizzo uses in her song, which goes, “Gotta blame it on my juice/Ya-ya-ee, ya-ya-ee, ya-ya-ee, ya-ya-ee.”
R&B singer India.Arie appears to agree, as she commented on the social media post saying that she thought Lizzo paid Peniston for the record. “I thought she interpolated it intentionally and paid you for it. I hate that ANY one would not automatically KNOW this IS a signature of yours. Clearly. But as musicians i guess we hear it more clearly,” she wrote.
Peniston further explained in another Instagram post, where she said, “For everybody who thought I was exaggerating on my claims of #copyrightinfringement please go check out the article I’m the the #3rd person who has said something @lizzobeeating #cecepeniston #lizzo #music #yaayumsong #finally #mysong just for the record and so you understand ... anytime anybody uses a song over 7 seconds thats using a ‘portion’ of their copyright , Lizzo not only takes over that , she’s used several times adding up to about 40 seconds , its my lyric it’s written down as well , it’s the signature to the opening in my song #finally and all commercials are using it from the ‘Adlib’ section because they know it’s catchy sooo #notjustanadlib it’s a check !!!!”
Lizzo was recently accused of plagiarizing her hit, “Truth Hurts.” Songwriter and producer Justin Raisen claims that Lizzo stole elements from a collaboration they did two years ago called “Healthy.”
