After teasing upcoming music through their newly-formed Ghetto Sage group, Saba, Noname and Smino drop off their debut effort, “Häagen Dazs.” As previous frequent collaborators, the three rappers first created a Twitter account under the name “Ghetto Sage” and began hinting at new music.

“N*ggas deserve a classic so…” they wrote on Friday (Oct. 11).

The rap trio further tempted fans with tweets in the following days, writing “Should we drop a song” on Sunday (Oct. 13), finally giving fans a release date on Monday (Oct. 14), tweeting, “10/17.”

Following up on their promise, the group came though with “Häagen Dazs,” a hypnotic track produced by PRODXVZN.

With Saba and Noname both hailing from Chicago and Smino from St. Louis, the three Midwestern rappers have been longtime collaborators in the making. They last worked together on Noname’s “Shadow Man” and “Ace,” which came from her 2018 Room 25 album. The trio also performed “Ace” together on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this year.

This past year has also seen independent growth from each artist, with Noname dropping off “Song 31” featuring Phoelix and “Song 32,” Saba releasing “Noise” with Klassik and Smino coming through with “Reverend.” Noname, Saba and Smino each released their last full-length albums in 2018, with Noname’s Room 25, Smino’s NOIR and Saba’s Care For Me.

In addition to Ghetto Sage, Smino and Saba both already head their own individual collectives. Pivot Gang, the Chicago-based and Saba-led collective, released their debut compilation album You Can’t Sit With Us in April. Smino serves as the founder of the Zero Fatigue collective, which hosts artists like A$AP Bari and Ravyn Lenae.

With the release of their debut single now out, the trio is currently working on more music. A press release from the group told fans to “stay tuned for more from Ghetto Sage coming soon.”
