Pharrell to be honored at 2019 Hollywood Film Awards

He’ll be awarded for his ‘The Black Godfather’ contribution.

Pharrell Williams is set to be honored at the 23rd Hollywood Film Awards on Sunday, Nov. 3. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the award-winning musician and producer will receive the Hollywood Song Award for “Letter to My Godfather,” his tribute to Clarence Avant, which was featured in Reginald Hudlin’s Documentary The Black Godfather.

The Netflix film, released this June, memorialized Avant, who was known as “the godfather of black music.” A multi-hyphenate, Avant is credited with discovering and managing several black artists, buying the first black-owned radio station with Avant Garde Broadcasting and running his Venture Records and Sussex Records record labels throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s.

“Clarence Avant connects us all through his incredible impact since before I was born up until now. He’s the godfather to so many of us – and not just African Americans, most of the industry,” Williams wrote in a press statement when the song arrived this June.

In addition to Williams’ “Letter to My Godfather,” The Black Godfather soundtrack included “Killer Joe” and “Eesom” by Quincy Jones, “Baby, I Love You” by Aretha Franklin, “Save the Children” and “California Soul” by Marvin Gaye, “If It Ain’t Funky” by Charles L. Brown, “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5 and more.

Along with Williams, the team behind Marvel Studio’s Avengers: Endgame, the highest-grossing film of all-time, will be honored with the Hollywood Blockbuster Award.

Other award winners will include Shia LaBeouf with the Hollywood Breakthrough Screenwriter Award, Rocketman’s Taron Egerton for the Hollywood Breakout Actor Award, Harriet’s Cynthia Erivo with the Hollywood Breakout Actress Award, Booksmart’s Olivia Wilde for the Hollywood Breakthrough Director Award, Parasite’s Bong Joon-ho with the Hollywood Filmmaker Award, The Irishman and Joker’s Emma Tillinger Koskoff for the Hollywood Producer Award, Ford v Ferrari’s James Mangold with the Hollywood Director Award, The Two Popes’ Anthony McCarten for the the Hollywood Screenwriter Award and more.

The 23rd Hollywood Film Awards will be hosted by actor and comedian Rob Riggle at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA.
