Akon’s career has evolved gracefully over the years, with the veteran singer placing a strong focus on his philanthropic efforts and business endeavors in recent years.

After recently launching his own cryptocurrency Akoin and helping bring electricity to hundreds of communities in 15 countries in Africa, Akon now reportedly has his eye on the US presidency.

During a recent interview with Newsweek, the entertainer revealed that he’s been thinking about running for office in the 2020 election.

“I’ve been thinking about running for 2020 very seriously,” he shared. “But I didn’t want to just do it because I feel like I want to continue doing what I’m doing and hope that builds me enough momentum [for people] to say, ‘You know what, if you run we’ll support you.’”

He also shared some of his perspective on how he feels living America under Donald Trump’s presidency.

“I feel a lot more unsafe,” he shared. “I feel unempowered. Honestly, I feel it’s gonna be a fight. I feel like I should be always prepared for the unexpected. I feel very uncomfortable. And I feel a lot of Americans do; even some white Americans feel that way because they’re watching backlash of his decisions. It’s not what’s happening now, because it’s clear it’s creating a whole bunch of divide today. But I think tomorrow that impact is going to be so much more devastating.”

Akon further elaborated, adding, “After Obama, you had blacks, whites, Hispanics, everybody working together. We really came a long way to get people to come together, and look at each other as humans, and work towards a common cause. And now it seems like everything that was done is being undone, with gangs and race groups reemerging. It’s just horrible.”

Fortunately, his optimism lies in doing what he feels is right for the people and has several plans in the works regarding how he is going to continue giving back.

“At first, I used to always tell myself that I would never do it… But now I’m starting to realize through experience that the only way to make change is to be in it,” he added, further explaining why running for president in 2020 has been on his mind.

Time will tell if Akon decides to officially run but for now, we definitely salute all of his humanitarian and business-savvy efforts.
