JAY-Z drops star-studded 'Story of OJ' footnotes video, reveals '4:44' film date

Chris Rock, Mahershala Ali, and Kendrick Lamar are among the participants in the video.

JAY-Z's 13th studio album 4:44 promised some visual elements with several trailers before its release, and on Monday evening, TIDAL subscribers got a taste.

In a video called "Footnotes for 'The Story of O.J.,'" JAY-Z enlists celebrities like Chris Rock, Mahershala Ali, Kendrick Lamar, Trevor Noah, Will Smith, and Van Jones to share their experiences with and perspectives on racism. JAY himself offers musings as well.

“We tend as black people — because we never had anything, which is understandable — we get to a place and we just think we separate ourselves from the culture,” JAY-Z says in the video. “Like where O.J. will get to a space where he’s like, ‘I’m not black, I’m O.J.’ Like Tiger Woods will get to a space and think, ‘I’m above the culture.’ That same person when he’s playing golf and playing great, you’re protected, but when you’re not, they’re gonna put pictures of you drunk driving and embarrass you, and the world will eat you up and spit you out.”

JAY-Z calls out Kanye on the album’s first track.

The backdrop of the video is "The Story of O.J.," the 4:44 highlight that sees Hov offering advice for how blacks can overcome systemic racism and empower themselves economically. TIDAL released the animated music video late Thursday, at the same time as the release of 4:44.

After the "Footnotes of 'The Story of O.J.'" concluded, the video revealed more news: 4:44, a short film, will apparently hit TIDAL on Friday, July 7 at 4:44 (presumably in the afternoon). The film, which was the first glimpse we got of the project, will feature Mahershala Ali, Danny Glover and Lupita Nyong'o.
