Tyler the Creator exploded onto the music scene in 2011 when his sinister black and white visuals for “Yonkers” debuted online and threw conservatives into a frenzy. A voice to fear with antics to match, the California-based emcee emerged into stardom, backed by an eclectic, ragtag collective that would call themselves Odd Future. However, at 26-years-old the emcee, also known as Wolf Haley, has shared a very personal journey of his – a documentary that details the creation of his third album Cherry Bomb – shedding on light on his work ethic, accomplishments, and aspirations.

“Cherry Bomb the Documentary,” directed by Mikey Alfred, takes viewers and fans alike into the sessions that birthed his acclaimed album of the same name. Narrated by Tyler himself, the 42-minute special focuses on his musical passion and creative drive. “Usually he has something ready and he’ll already have an idea,” says singer Kali Uchis, who appeared on “Fucking Young/Perfect.” “Obviously he produces everything, and he really hones in on what he wants it to be,” Uchis continued.

Between touring and studio sessions, A$AP Rocky, Vince Staples, and Chaz Bundick appear throughout, with ScHoolboy Q receiving the honor of “being one of the few rappers that I f—k with,” as Tyler describes. Pharrell Williams, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West cameo in critical portions of the doc, further demonstrating Tyler’s ascension as he gains not only the respect of his idols, he is able to collaborate and work alongside them. “He really be spittin’ though but n----s not listening to him,” Tunechi told the camera. “They need to listen.”

From scribbling doughnuts to orchestrating in the studio of the great Hans Zimmer, Camp Flog Gnaw’s head counselor has come a long, and you can witness some of the travel in the video below:
