Almost 20 years ago, Gina Prince-Bythewood wrote and directed what would end up being a classic film for a generation, Love and Basketball. The film centered around a romance between two basketball players, played by Omar Epps and Sanaa Latham, whose childhood friendship grew into a romance.

At the center of the film is Maxwell’s rendition of “This Woman’s Work,” which became an instant classic. Today, however, the song is being used to represent the love of a mother to her son in Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s new FOX series, “Shots Fired,” where Sanaa Lathan also plays the lead.

A song that was used for romance now perfectly represents the anguish of mothers who are loosing their sons to unjust violence. Maxwell’s words on Instagram sum it up:
