In the latest installment of REVOLT TV's "Global Spin Awards Presents: Respect The DJ" series, the cameras follow Flosstradamus, the massively successful and fan-favorite DJ duo comprised of Curt Cameruci and Josh Young—well, formerly. Since filming, Young has left the project to pursue solo endeavors, but Cameruci has already expressed that there's no bad blood between the men and had promised that the movement "only gets bigger." Despite the turn of events, their story is no less inspiring.
Hailing from Michigan, Cameruci (known as Autobot) got his start in spinning after his thrift store-owning father ended up with two turntables. Similarly, Young (or J2K), who calls Chicago home, was first introduced to turntables and a mixer at the house of one of his skater friends and eventually took to his parents' record collection to practice. Upon Cameruci moving to Chicago in 2000, the two men met five years later through a mutual friend who noticed their sets were similar. Soon after, they began throwing the kind of parties they now describe as "kitchen sink nights"; think The Clash meets Waka Flocka Flame.
In this Respect the DJ episode, the duo talks how they got their name (spoiler: a drunken suggestion made while chilling on a porch), where they find inspiration (while Young was raised on pop, Cameruci's first love for music came from the Beastie Boys), and their "yin-yang" dynamic (Cameruci says, "If I can't finish a song, he can. We're completing each other in a way that no one else can").
Watch the Exclusive Sneak Peak below.
They also reveal how they developed their stage presence and maintain a healthy lifestyle despite demanding schedules, and dive into the creation of their fan base HDYNATION, their clothing line of the same name, and their record label Hi Def Youth.
Ultimately, the key to their success has been, as Young puts it: "We stay in the mentality of: we never 'made it.'"
"Global Spin Awards Presents: Respect The DJ | Flosstradamus" premieres on REVOLT TV on Wednesday, January 25 at 7pm ET.
