Sistas coming to save the day

Hidden Figures

This may be one time when the phrase “based on the incredible true story” is actually true. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe play three of the scientists and engineers at NASA who worked on the space program. Based on a book of the same name, the movie focuses on their challenges and triumphs as they helped to launch John Glen into space. Eye candy provided by Straight Outta Compton‘s Aldis Hodge and House of Cards‘ Mahershala Ali. The bad news is, we have to wait until January for this treat.

Come for: Janelle Monae’s saucy character dropping gems like: “Every time we have a chance to get ahead, they move the finish line. Every time.”

Stay for: Original music by Pharrell Williams.

When the Bough Breaks

Funnywoman Regina Hall turns serious in this new thriller, as half of a couple trying hard to get pregnant. She and her husband (Morris Chestnut) finally hire a surrogate (played by newcomer Jaz Sinclair), who quickly develops an obsession with the husband… a dangerous obsession. Like, it’s pretty scary. Where will you be September 9?

Come for: Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall; what a beautiful freaking couple!

Stay for: Psychotic antics that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Atlanta

Donald Glover stars in and executive produces this series coming to FX on September 6. When his cousin Paper Boy’s mixtape goes viral, Earnest “Earn” Marks tries to get in early and become his manager. Atlanta follows the ups and downs that ensue as they try to better their lives via the music industry.

Come for: Donald Glover

Pitch

Kylie Bunbury stars on this FOX show as Ginny Baker, a young female pitcher who becomes the first woman to play in the major leagues. She breaks barriers, yes, but the boys don’t take too kindly. Pitch premieres September 22 at 9 p.m./8 CT.

Come for: A black girl being the millennial Jackie Robinson.

Stay for: Her love interest, played by Zack from Saved by the Bell. Who didn’t love Zack Morris?
