AFROPUNK backtracks, drops M.I.A. as its London headliner

The organizers said they wanted to "do it right."

Just last month, the organizers of AFROPUNK said they were standing by their decision to have M.I.A. headline their inaugural London fest. Today (July 15) there's been a change of heart, as they announced a mutual decision to part ways.

“We are excited and honored to do our first AFROPUNK festival in London and want to do it right," the statement reads. "After discussing the situation with the artist and the community, a decision was agreed upon by all involved that M.I.A will no longer headline AFROPUNK London.”

MIA certainly has other things in the works, having released yesterday artwork and a release date of September 9 for her new album, A.I.M. AFROPUNK says they will announce the new headliner as well as more of the lineup on July 19. The festival takes place September 24.
