Ludacris will be the first rapper to perform at Guantanamo Bay, and he is set to do so this weekend for the Fourth of July.
Performing as part of the "Freedom Festival" at Guantánamo’s Windward Ferry Landing, the three-time Grammy Award winner will play at the U.S Navy base in Cuba for the families and troops of the Department Of Defense contractors who are stationed there.
The venue where he is set to perform the event is miles away from the Detention Center Zone, 89 War on Terror prisoners are detained without trial. The prisoners will not be able to hear or see the performance, according to the Miami Herald. While Luda is the first rapper to perform on the base, he is not the first the musical act. Jimmy Buffett played the open-air Lyceum movie theater back in December 2002\, while Magic! played the 2015 Fourth of July event. Jimmy Eat World played the year before, while the Plain White Ts performed this past October.
Ludacris has been in Cuba as of late for the filming of "Fast 8," the eighth installment in the box office blockbuster series.
"Every year we get a special guest around the Fourth of July, but Gitmo hasn’t seen a star with as big a name as Ludacris in several years," said Navy Chief Monique Hilley to The Miami Herald. "The base is really looking forward to it."
