Beyoncé's BET Awards Opening Proves 2016 Is Her Blackest Year Ever

Bey and Kendrick Lamar surprised everyone with a performance of "Freedom."

No one saw this coming. At 8 p.m. ET on the dot, dancers in African-inspired tribal paint walked down the aisle slowly while an excerpt of a Martin Luther King Jr. speech played. They took their place on the stage other than King Bey BET awaited. Beyoncé, who had not appeared at the show in years (in person), completely slayed the entire internet. And then it got better: Kendrick Lamar joined her for a performance of "Freedom" her epic album Lemonade. This will be hard to top.

Ladies and gentlemen, BET showed every network how you open an awards show. The people agree.

Zendaya, who appeared in the visuals for Lemonade, was sad that she missed out.

BET heard you talking sh-t, too, by the way. Like they said, "We got you."
