After debuting a bone-chilling teaser back in April, which included Nina Simone's cover of Billie Holliday's "Strange Fruit" as its sonic guide, on Tuesday (January 21) Fox Searchlight released the full-length trailer for "The Birth of a Nation."
The upcoming drama depicts the true tale of Nat Turner, a slave who led a rebellion that resulted in in the deaths of more than 50 white people in Southampton County, Virginia in 1831, before he was hanged. Nate Parker wrote and directed the film and portrays Turner. The Birth of a Nation won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival and is now set for a theatrical release on October 7.
In the trailer (set to Andra Day's "Rise Up), we find slave owners praising Parker's Turner until an act of kindness between him and a white child becomes a flashpoint. Turner is punished and beaten, battered but not broken. He then speaks about his mission to rebel and unite fellow slaves. The trailer ends with the moments before the clash between slaves and slave owners.
Fox Searchlight previously released the films "12 Years a Slave" and "Notorious."
