Erykah Badu is always creating something. Across her social media accounts, Badu teased the release of a new music video starring "Roberto" Glasper and introducing Sarah Bellam, set to premiere Friday (June 24) at noon.
The track, "Mayiysha (So Long)," appears on Glasper's album Everything’s Beautiful, and sounds like a soulful interpretation of Brazilian jazz standard "The Girl From Ipanema."
But our question is, who is Sarah Bellam?
Is Sarah Bellam a new artist on Badu's Control FreaQ? Going by this tweet from December, Sarah has been in the works for months.
Let's explore further. In this selfie on Twitter from April, Badu listed several of her aliases and said she is "142 other characters."
Maria Manuela, Badoula, Sarah Bellam, Fatbella, SHE ILL, Amerykah, Etc and 142 other Characters.... pic.twitter.com/2ln40s7J6s— ErykahBadoula (@fatbellybella) April 15, 2016
And two months ago, Badu posted this picture of a new hat she designed, called the Sarah Bellam.
What we've learned over her almost 20-year career is that Badu is a very intentional creator. Sarah Bellam, then, is likely a play on cerebellum, the part of the brain at the back of the skull. Its responsible for coordinating and regulating motor control, or the movement-related functions of the body. Maybe Badu just wants us to use our brains more. Maybe she'll be a recurring character in Badu's videos. We'll see Friday at noon!
