DeRay McKesson, better known as @deray on Twitter, has launched an long-shot mayoral bid in an attempt to inject new strategy and optimizing in his hometown of Baltimore.

The activist, who rose to prominence for his real-time social media messaging during the Ferguson unrest, filed the paperwork in the last hour before the deadline, according to the Washington Post.

The field is a crowded one on the democrat side, as the area is a blue-leaning state. McKesson will face a crowded field, including favorite and former mayor Sheila Dixon. He isn't, however, taking his candidacy lightly; in the Post report, it was noted he formed an advisement group and his team researched policy and area he could import his expertise and experiences.

Last year, REVOLT tapped McKesson as one of the New Leaders of Social Justice. He's since earned meetings with presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders with his tireless pursuits and prominent presence, first in the aftermath of Michael Brown's killing and later as Black Lives Matters evolved from a hashtag to an organization, the former education administrator rallied around projects like We The Protestors and Campaign Zero. Earlier this year he appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert .
