Peter Liang, a rookie cop who shot Akai Gurley in a dark Brooklyn stairway in 2014, was found guilty in court on Thursday (February 11) and later dismissed from the New York Police Department.
Liang was also convicted of official misconduct and could face up to 15 years in prison during his sentencing, April 14th.
“The death of Akai Gurley was a tragedy,” NYC Mayor de Blasio said in a statement. “The jury has now spoken, and we respect its decision. We hope today’s outcome brings some closure to the Gurley family after this painful event.”
The rookie cop is the first officer to be convicted in an on-duty shooting of a citizen in over a decade.
