Ahead of his performance at The Filmore Charlotte, PartyNextDoor took time off from his Summer’s Over tour with Jeremih to speak with Power 98 FM in North Carolina. In the rare nine-minute interview, the OVO Sound–hitmaker confessed that his songwriting process becomes easier when he’s writing for other artists.

“I’d say it’s easier to write for other people than to write for myself,” he said on Tuesday. “I can go into imagination with other people. For myself, it’s more of like, I’ve gotta admit it and I gotta tell the truth and nothing but the truth because I can’t hide that. It’s easier to write for other people. I prefer writing for myself because I like the challenge.”

PND also explained that when he wrote Rihanna’s “Work” and “Sex With Me,” she invited him into her home where he interviewed her to find out more about her personal life. “It was inspiring. She let me into her house, literally,” he told the station. “It was a working camp, a working environment. She told me a few stories. I interviewed her and then I wrote a few songs for her. That’s really how it went down.”

The 23-year-old Mississauga, Ontario, native was also asked about what he likes and dislikes about the current state of the music industry.

“I would like to say that OVO, me being on OVO, they kinda protect me from the industry, so I’m not around it,” he explained. “I’m not around it unless I choose to be, or unless I ask to be. I wish I had more to say about that, but I’m literally at home making my own music, unless I ask to be in somebody’s house writing music for them.”
