Azealia Banks is signing a record deal with RZA and revoking her support for Donald Trump, the Harlem hip-hop artist announced on her Facebook this week.

The new deal makes sense, as Banks was recently cast by RZA, the Wu-Tang Clan rapper and director, to act in his musical drama, Coco. She’ll play the film’s title character, a female twentysomething poetry student from Brooklyn who dreams of making it big in the rap game. Lorraine Toussaint, Jill Scott, Common, and Method Man will also be featured in the film that is expected to hit theaters sometime next year.

Since the release of her breakout hit “212,” the 24-year-old artist has experienced a turbulent history with record labels. She first split with Universal Music in 2014, and released her debut album, Broke With Expensive Taste, with Prospect Park the same year, before leaving the label in 2015. Her latest project was the 8-track, independently released mixtape titled Slay-Z, back in March of this year.
Her new deal is at least somewhat surprising considering her career has been damaged due to her public meltdowns, including homophobic and racist rants on social media. Bobby Digital has not publicly commented on signing Banks but it seems like she’s already doing some damage control.
Two days prior to her announcement, Banks declared that she’s no longer supporting Trump for president. Her admission followed the recently leaked audio that features the Republican bragging about groping and kissing women without their permission. “I made a major mistake endorsing toupey-toupee,” she began. “Women’s rights are important and we must protect them. I tried… I reached… I even carried … I take it all back.”

She continued, admitting that she regrets making attempts to publicly comment on the current cesspool of American politics. “I tried being a vigilant citizen, seeing as being up on it seemed to be the responsible thing to do… but instead I alienated loads of my fans and followers,” she explained. “I deeply regret mixing music and politics as I am now finding it nearly impossible to keep up with the election and the media frenzy.”

There’s no official word or timetable for when we’ll hear new music from Banks, but will fans be listening following all of her homophobic and racist behavior? Hopefully, this is the beginning of more positive steps toward a sustainable career for Banks that will leave her inner-troll under the bridge and keep her prodigious rap and vocal skills on full display.
