Black Keys/Arcs frontman Dan Auerbach moves from one creative project to the next. After the debut of his latest band’s album Yours, Dreamily last summer, he has now signed on to write a soundtrack album to accompany Murder Ballads, a comic book series described as a “rock ‘n’ roll noir story about the music industry and redemption.” Though the mix has yet to be finalized, Auerbach has confirmed the LP will be “shorter than a double LP and longer than eight minutes.”

The series, scheduled for release in fall 2016, will be written by Gabe Soria and illustrated by Paul Reinward. Auerbach met Soria through a mutual friend in his early Black Keys’ days, and have been plotting on a collaboration for years.

“We were kind of addicted to records, and that’s how we bonded early on,” he told Vulture. “[The comic concept] was pretty fully formed in Gabe’s mind. The music that he was talking about seemed – well, I could wrap my mind around it. He knew I was really big into northern Mississippi music, so I understood the reference points when he was talking to me about it.”

For the accompanying soundtrack, Auerbach has enlisted musicians Mick Collins of the Dirtbombs and the Gories. He also shared his idea to package the soundtrack with the comic, saying, “”I can’t personally listen to music that has lyrics and read at the same time. That’s like doing two yo-yos at once. Absolute insanity. So I know how I’m gonna enjoy it: I’ll do them separately, but they’ll be connected in my mind.”
