Believe it or not, it’s been a year since Missy Elliott’s jaw-dropping Super Bowl Halftime show and her return to music.
Continuing to reject the idea of conventional lyrics, visual aspects and sonically charged pop records, Missy stands as a propelled icon amongst artists who bare it all. After collaborating with Janet Jackson on “BURNITUP!” and recently releasing the video for “WTF (Where They From),” fans are back to melting at Missy’s style and futuristic Segway moves.
During a sit down with Scott Vener and Pharrell on his Beats 1 Radio showOTHERtone, Missy recalled first working with Puff Daddy, her current creative space and her infamous ‘Hee-Hee-Hee-Hee-How?’ line.
“I went in, I did the rap and he came in and I walked out because I didn’t want to see what he was going to say,” Elliott said. “He came out and was like ‘Yo money, what the f–k did you say? ‘Hee-Hee-Hee-Hee-How?’ What kind of s–t is that?’ And little did I know that, that was going to be the tagline and that DJs would always bring that back.”
As for her return, she said, “Well, Pharrell hit me. He said 'I'm not trying to push you, but people miss you. Do you see what happened out there? Have you seen the charts'? I think I was still in shock. It still hadn't registered. He was like 'I want to get in the studio with you.' Who turns down Pharrell?”
